GM Plant “Factory Zero” will be exclusively for Electric Vehicles

Before the official debut of GMC Hummer EV, General Motors announced that its Detroit-Hamtramck factory is being renamed to Factory Zero. This factory will be the place where all new-generation electric vehicles are going to be built and the first vehicle will be GMC Hummer EV and Cruise Origin, an electric, self-driving vehicle that will be used by a cruise in its autonomous vehicle. GM said other EVs will also be built here only well no details about future EVs are being shared by automakers.

The production of all-electric GMC Hummer is scheduled in late 2021. The GM Ultium battery platform that is shared in Hummer EV and Cruise Origin can be used to make a wide range of all-electric “cars, trucks, and more said by GM.

The factory name is related to GM plans for the future that is “Zero-crashes, zero-emissions, and zero-congestion”. In this plant GM has invested $2.2 billion, this is the largest investment done in a plant in GM history. This whole investment is to retool and upgrade the plant for electric vehicles as they need new machines for paint, body shops, and general assembly.

GM said that this change will create more than 2200 manufacturing jobs once the factory is fully operational.  The automaker also said that the waste produced while manufacturing will be used in roadways, cooling towers, and fire-suppression systems.  Before the changes, GM was producing Cadillac CT6 and Chevrolet Impala in this factory.
